The curriculum unit An Agenda for Peace: The Role of the United Nations, analyzes the concepts of peace and conflict through the activities of the United Nations and presents students with a study of how an international organization has attempted to fulfill its goals of maintaining and securing peace. The United Nations, as an international organization, is a rich source for students to study the concepts of peace and conflict. The United Nations is involved in activities in all corners of the world, building peace as well as keeping peace.

An Agenda for Peace: The Role of the United Nations commences with a lesson on the founding of the United Nations to set the historical context for the unit. Two lessons-"What is Conflict?" and "What is Peace?"- serve as the conceptual framework for the unit. The remaining lessons then analyze three focus areas of the United Nations- peacekeeping, development and relief, and the environment-within the framework of peace and conflict.

Using engaging primary sources, students analyze the impact of UN peacekeeping missions, hold a model earth summit, and reenact the UN Charter Conference in San Francisco.

Unit Goals

  • to gain a better understanding of the concepts of conflict and peace
  • to analyze the role of an international organization such as the United Nations in resolving and/or managing conflicts
  • to explore the early history of the United Nations
  • to exemplify structural and physical conflicts through an exploration of UNICEF activities
  • to explain the role of the United Nations Environment Programme to prevent, mediate, and resolve environmental conflict; and to achieve and maintain environmental peace.
