2008 NCTA WORKSHOP INFORMATION


Teaching About East Asia: A Seminar for Middle School Social Studies and Language Arts Teachers

Conducted by Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education (SPICE) in conjunction with the National Consortium for Teaching About Asia (NCTA), with support from the Freeman Foundation.

Seminar sessions:
Fridays 8:30 am to 3:30 pm
February 8, March 7, April 25, May 16

The seminars will cover East Asia, Feudal Japan, Ancient China, and Religions in China and Japan.

 

Goals

Participants will:

  1. Gain a deeper understanding of the geography, history, culture, religion, literature and art of China and Japan, with emphasis on topics included in the 6th and 7th grade Social Studies Standards for California.
  2. Design curriculum that integrates content knowledge about China and Japan with effective, thoughtful, and engaging instructional approaches.
  3. Be provided with instructional materials about China and Japan appropriate for their classrooms.
  4. Become a community of learners committed to a long-term engagement in the exploration of Asian studies.

Requirements

Teachers are required to attend all sessions, complete assigned readings before each session, develop and submit a lesson plan and a reflection plan, and participate in group discussions.

Stipend

Upon completion of the 30-hour seminar and all requirements, each participant will receive a $250 stipend. After completion of the follow-up session in Fall 2007, each participant will receive an additional $250 stipend.
